Dolphins, Wildlife and Shelling Tour

A private, discovery-focused cruise aimed at dolphins and coastal wildlife, with time for shelling and shoreline finds when conditions allow. Built around conditions, not scripts.

Overview

This is the “classic” Coastal Passages experience: slow, intentional time on the water with a flexible route that targets likely dolphin areas and wildlife zones first, then shifts to a shelling stop if conditions cooperate.

Wildlife is never guaranteed, but the tour is designed to maximize your chances through timing, routing, and staying mobile.

What You Will Do

Depending on wind, tide, and boat traffic, your trip may include:

  • Cruising likely dolphin areas and stopping when we have good viewing conditions

  • Spotting coastal birds and marsh wildlife in calmer water

  • A shoreline or sandbar stop for shelling and shoreline finds (when conditions allow)

  • Light narration about the waterways, habitat, and what you are seeing

What You May See

What you see depends on the day and the season, but common sightings and finds can include:

  • Dolphins

  • Pelicans, terns, herons, egrets, ospreys, and other coastal birds

  • Rays, fish activity, and other signs of life in the water

  • Shells, sand dollars, and occasional fossil fragments

Sightings note:

Dolphins and wildlife are never guaranteed. The tour is built around the best plan for the day, not promises.

Shelling & Collecting Guidelines

We keep stops respectful and legal. If there are any local restrictions for the area we use that day, we will tell you before the stop.

Book Your Time on the Water

Choose a tour or private charter, pick a date, and reserve your time in minutes.

Each experience follows a general plan, with routes and timing adjusted for weather, tides, and the day’s conditions to ensure the best possible experience.

Tours follow a planned experience and are ideal if you want a guided outing.

Private charters offer more flexibility for groups, preferences, or special requests.

Departures & Meeting Points

Coastal Passages operates as a service-area business serving North Carolina’s Crystal Coast. We do not operate from a public storefront or office.

How meeting points work

  • Your meeting point is confirmed in your booking email.

  • We meet at pre-arranged public access points based on trip type, conditions, and schedule.

Scheduled Tours (book online):

  • Default departure is an Emerald Isle public access point.

Cedar Point departures:

  • Only used when explicitly offered for that time slot, or when the captain confirms a change due to conditions and notifies guests in writing (text/email) no later than the day before whenever possible.

Arrival timing

Plan to arrive 15 minutes early for parking, gear, and a short safety briefing.

Will we definitely stop for shelling?

We will make the best call based on tide, wind, and safety. If a stop is not safe or worthwhile, we will keep the tour moving and focus on wildlife and scenery.

Can we keep shells?

Usually, yes, but rules can vary by location. We will give you guidance before the stop.

What should we wear?

Comfortable clothing for sun and wind. Bring a light layer and shoes that can handle a sandy stop.
