From Charlotte to Swansboro: A Family Day on the Water with Coastal Passages

A few days on the Crystal Coast is one of the easiest ways to feel far from Charlotte without spending the whole trip getting there.

For my wife’s birthday, we stayed in Swansboro, North Carolina, a quiet coastal town with local shops, walkable streets, and easy access to the water.

A five-hour Coastal Passages tour through Swansboro and the Crystal Coast, from dolphins and shark teeth to oyster farms, marshes, and one unexpected alligator.

On our first day, we booked a trip with Captain Seth from Coastal Passages. That decision ended up shaping the whole trip.

We started by riding out on the White Oak River toward Marsh Island Oyster Farm. Before this trip, I do not think any of us realized how much there was to see and learn in those shallow waters. Seth walked us through oysters, whelks, hermit crabs, sand dollars, and the kind of coastal life that is easy to overlook unless someone slows you down and shows you what is there.

Nothing felt rushed or forced. It was not a captain running through a script. It felt like being out on the water with someone who understands the area and knows how to let the day unfold.

From there, we headed toward Shark Tooth Island to hunt for shark teeth. My son found a whole bunch, which instantly turned that stop into one of the highlights of the trip. There is something about watching your kid search the sand, find something real, and light up over it that makes the whole day better.

On the ride, we spotted several dolphin pods. That alone would have made the trip worth it.

After Shark Tooth Island, we docked in downtown Swansboro and walked into town for a quick break. We grabbed snacks at Bake Bottle & Brew, then stopped for candy at Rocket Fizz. It was a simple part of the day, but it made the experience feel connected to Swansboro itself. We were not just passing by the town from the water. We got to step into it for a bit.

Then we got back on the boat and headed into the marshes. That is where the day took another turn. We saw an alligator.

Dolphins, shark teeth, oysters, sand dollars, hermit crabs, whelks, local shops, marshes, and an alligator, all in one trip. It sounds like the kind of itinerary someone would exaggerate after the fact, but that was the day.

What made it work was Captain Seth. He had the local history, the wildlife knowledge, and the calm confidence you want from someone guiding your family on the water. He knew when to explain, when to let us explore, and when to simply let the moment happen.

That is what separated the experience from a standard boat tour. It felt personal. It felt flexible. It felt like a day built around the water, the conditions, and the people on the boat.

For families visiting Swansboro, Emerald Isle, or the surrounding Crystal Coast, Coastal Passages is the kind of experience that can turn a short coastal trip into something much more memorable.

We came from the Charlotte area looking for a few days away. We left with one of those family days we will be talking about for years.

Huge thanks to Captain Seth and Coastal Passages for an incredible day on the water.
